Caravan Reverse Camera Kits: Choosing the right one

We look at having choices of similar products as a positive. It allows you to weigh its pros and cons vis-a-vis your needs. You have it with cars, mobile phones, navigation apps, etc. Now, you also have a choice with your caravan reverse camera kits.

We, at VHEDIA, offer a few caravan reverse camera kit options that should cover the typical requirement of any caravan owner – quality resolution, affordable pricing, ease of set-up and durability.

Still, aside from these products, we’re here to provide a quick guide on these features so that you can make the best choice for your setup.

What quality and video format do I need?

Currently, 1080p (1920×1080) AHD is the best resolution offered by reverse and rearview cameras. This means a more precise picture than the 720p generation of cameras or old video formats.

We thus recommend getting a 1080 AHD feed for your caravan camera setup, though this can be lower at times (i.e., 720p AHD) if it is a Wi-Fi camera.

Meanwhile, regarding video signal, you must go for cameras on AHD (or Analog High Definition). Compared to CVBS (or Composite Video Blanking and Sync) cameras, AHDs allows the transmission of higher resolution images from your camera to your head unit/rear view screen.

Vhedia cameras are all 1080p AHD ensuring the best video image quality is shown on your car screen.

Wired or Wireless caravan reverse camera kits?

There is not much difference between wired and wireless cameras nowadays. Cables and wires are more durable, while wireless transmission has become more reliable due to the improvement in technology. Basically, it’s now a matter of preference and the features you need for your caravan and vehicle.

Still, there are obvious pros and cons between the two.

Wireless caravan reverse cameras require less work in terms of installation. You just need to mount the camera, receiver and antenna. Then, draw a power source for the camera via a connection to your reverse lights or battery. Finally, connect to a head unit or rear view display.

Also, these camera setups may cost you more, but they are easier to install as there are fewer cables to run.

However, you might run into signal interference once in a while. This is possible if you have other gadgets running nearby that also use the same frequency as your camera (e.g., heavy areas of WiFi, other wireless cameras) or if your camera and receiver did not pair properly.

On the other hand, the wired version of caravan reverse cameras boasts a more reliable connection since signal interruption is less likely. In addition, transmittal via cables

ensures better picture quality appearing on your screen and instant refresh rate.

But, the effort and time needed to install these cameras may turn off some drivers. The cost, though, maybe less of an issue as wired options have the required features but are more wallet-friendly.

What display to view camera images?

You can show pictures from Vhedia caravan reverse cameras on your head unit screen or a rearview display mounted on your rearview mirror. This is just a matter of your preference and convenience, as the wires and cables provided on the caravan camera kits allow you to choose your display and fit it to either.

What does the Camera Smart Switcher do?

Included in every Vhedia caravan reverse camera kit is a camera smart switcher. This device allows auto-switching from your caravan camera to your vehicle’s camera.

Simply put, once you disconnect your wireless connection or unplug your caravan cables, your display automatically shifts from the images of your caravan camera to the ones from your ute, truck or car.

Let us explain further. When you go into reverse, if your caravan or trailer is hooked up, you will see images from your caravan’s camera on your screen.  And when it is not hooked up, and you go into reverse, you will see the vehicle’s reverse camera instead.

Meantime, for the wireless versions of caravan reverse camera kits, the principle is the same, but there is an on-off switch by the dash.

Caravan and trailer owners will surely appreciate what the smart switcher does. You can read more about this tool here.

The difference between a Reverse and a Rear View Camera

What you need to consider here is the camera’s view angle. Reverse cameras point to a lower angle to view the pavement and possible obstacles you need to see while backing up your vehicle. And have a wide focal point so you can see more.

A rearview camera is often utilised while driving to see better what’s behind your vehicle while on the road. This camera uses a zooming feature to see what is behind you, just like a rear-view mirror.
