Head unit upgrade for your Landcruiser 79

79 Series Landcruiser Head Unit Upgrade

For this article, we’ll discuss 79 series landcruiser head unit upgrade and why you should do a head unit upgrade for your Landcruiser 79. Yes, THE Toyota Landcruiser 79 – the classic 4WD admired by both experts and enthusiasts in Australia and other countries.

Head unit upgrade for your Landcruiser 79

79 series landcruiser head unit upgrade, but why a head unit upgrade? Known as a pickup-style ute with a longer wheelbase compared to its other 70 series cousins, it is a vehicle you can rely on on the road and most especially off it. But as an SUV manufactured since the late 90s, its infotainment technology is a bit lacking (even on newer versions) compared to its modern contemporaries.

A head unit makeover is wanted or instead needed. Let us elaborate further.

79 series landcruiser head unit upgrade? Why!

Getting a head unit upgrade for your Landcruiser 79 opens up your vehicle to these incredible benefits:

  1. Use apps while on your vehicle.

Android Auto and Apple Carplay allow specific apps to function on your head unit. Now, you don’t need to handle your phone while on the road (which you shouldn’t do anyway).

With a touch of the screen or using a voice command, navigate back home, answer calls, listen to podcasts during long drives, reply to messages, among others. It makes drives more convenient, and of course, safer.

If you want to access more apps, getting an Android head unit gives you open access to all apps available on Google PlayStore.

  1. Expand your vehicle technology

Whether you want to install a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), a dashcam, a reversing cam, an OBD2 scan tool, or any Bluetooth device, upgrading your factory head unit provides a platform to install tools and instruments to advance your Landcruiser 79 technology.

Most of these head units already come with multiple plugs, ports, and wire harnesses so you can connect additional devices seamlessly.

  1. Clearer screen view

The newer 79s already have a decent touch screen infotainment system. However, they seem blurry compared to head units on the aftermarket. The quality of the screen resolution seems trivial but will come up very important, especially when using your navigation apps and offline maps or viewing the feed from your cameras.

  1. Better sound quality

If your 79 ute doesn’t have a digital signal processing (DSP) system installed, you’re missing out on a lot. The DSP enables more refined control over vehicles audio resulting in a better acoustic experience inside your car.

Admit it, workday traffic or weekend trips become more bearable/enjoyable if fine-tunes play in the background.

  1. Retain that factory look

Most aftermarket head units today are also factory-fit. This means that you don’t need to worry that the new head unit will be smaller or bigger than the slot of the OEM audio system. The new ones will tuck in nicely as if you did not replace them at all.

  1. Installation is a breeze

And if you’re worried about installation costs, you can replace your old head unit DIY-style. When you purchase a replacement system, they should come with a complete installation kit, including wires, cables, trim tools, and guides.

And they are mostly plug-and-play head units, so you just need to figure out how to install the unit properly, and you’re good to go.

  2. Pop off the facia using the removal tools included in the kit.
  3. Unplug the hazard button and digital clock.
  4. Undo the four (4) screws using a 10mm. They’re located on the corners around the radio.
  5. Gently pull out the radio and unplug all electrical wiring behind it.
  6. Locate the wiring heads and attach the Quick Connector Adapter Cables from the kit.
  7. Swap the digital clock and hazard button from the old frame to the new one.
  8. Install the three (3) cables for GPS, Camera, and USB. There should be labels to guide you here.
  9. Insert the 20-pin plug into the head unit. You can attach the battery, in the meantime, to test the head unit. For safety purposes, detach the battery again if you are ready to continue the installation.
  10. Feed the rear and front camera cables down near the glove box.
  11. Push the new head unit into the dash. Start with the bottom and make sure you tuck the wires behind, out of the way of the head unit to avoid damage.
  12. Check if the head unit’s fit on the dash. It should be locked in there.
  13. Re-attach the battery and test out the unit.

Our Final Word

The Toyota Landcruiser 79 is still one of Australia’s best off-road utes to own. A few other SUVs can match its combination of power, high load capacity, and durability. The only “flaw” on the 79’s design is that it is way behind dashboard technology.

But this is easily fixed with a head unit upgrade for your Landcruiser 79. With a modern head unit, you can now complement the inherent physical reliability of the Toyota 79 with apps and tools so you can utilise your vehicle better while making every drive safer and more convenient.

And with new infotainment system technology now more accessible and affordable than ever, today is the best time to get you and your beloved ute the upgrade it deserves!
