Whats is DAB+

DAB+ is the most widely used digital radio standard in the world, broadcasting in over 40 countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Norway, Poland, Malta, Denmark, the Netherlands, Hungary, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Tunisia, Qatar, Kuwait, and South Africa, to name a few.
DAB+ has been adopted as the preferred digital radio standard by the Broadcasting Unions of Europe and the Arab States, and there is widespread interest in implementing DAB+ in Asia-Pacific and Southern Africa.

The characteristics of AM, FM, and DAB+ transmissions are defined by broadcasting on different radio frequencies.
While AM uses longer wavelengths in the medium wave bands, allowing the signal to travel further, the band suffers from interference, especially in densely populated areas.
FM broadcasts on VHF Band II (88-108MHz), a higher frequency that offers better sound quality than AM. However, the band is subject to multipath interference and is congested, limiting radio’s ability to expand or offer new features and functionality.

Can I get DAB+

DAB+ digital radio is currently available in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, as well as Hobart, Darwin, Canberra, and Mandurah.
The digital radio signal is fully operational in all markets, and the installation of additional repeater sites has continued to improve coverage in these cities.

Commercial radio broadcasters on the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Dubbo, Albury, Lithgow, Sale, Bathurst, Cooma, Goulburn, Warragul, Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Bundaberg, and Murwillumbah have expressed an interest in DAB+.

Why should I use DAB+

DAB+ is a modern, digital radio technology that offers several benefits over traditional analog radio. The first and most obvious advantage is the better sound quality. DAB+ delivers crystal-clear, high-quality audio, free from the hissing, crackling, and fading that can occur with analog radio broadcasts. This means that you can enjoy your favorite music and radio programs with greater clarity and fidelity.

Another advantage of DAB+ is the increased number of available stations. DAB+ uses advanced audio compression technology to broadcast more stations in the same spectrum than analog radio. This means that you have access to a wider range of radio stations, including those that are not available on traditional FM or AM radio.

DAB+ also provides additional features that enhance your listening experience. These include program guides, album art, and text information about the stations and programs you are listening to. This additional information provides a richer listening experience and helps you to discover new music and programs.

Using DAB+ is also incredibly easy. You do not need to tune to a specific frequency, as the radio will automatically tune to the station. This makes it more user-friendly than traditional analog radio. Additionally, DAB+ is an environmentally friendly technology. It uses less energy than traditional analog radio, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps to combat climate change.

Overall, there are many reasons to use DAB+. With its superior sound quality, increased number of stations, additional features, and ease of use, DAB+ is a great choice for anyone who loves listening to radio.

Will DAB+ work with a Vhedia Head Unit?

Yes, DAB+ can work with a Vhedia head unit!

Through these Vhedia DAB+ digital radio add-on devices, you can now connect your head unit to the digital radio space. Plug these into an auxiliary input or a USB port and be ready to hear a new listening experience.

Is DAB+ going to die out?

There is no indication that DAB+ is going to die out anytime soon. It continues to be adopted in more countries worldwide and is becoming increasingly popular with listeners. While there may be other emerging technologies that could eventually replace DAB+, it is likely to remain a popular and widely used digital radio standard for the foreseeable future.

The unit was easy to install. It plugs directly into the Vhedia head unit and the antenna mounted (in my case) flush to the left-hand side of the front windscreen. Very neat and tidy. Overall, the unit was easy to install and works as advertised. Being at such a low price, why would you not add this great feature to your head unit. PS: In the image, the upper antenna is the DAB+ antenna whilst the lower antenna is the head unit’s Wi-Fi antenna.

  1. DAB module is a nice add on to the head unit for the small outlay.
DAB reception is not as good as FM or AM and is best enjoyed around town but this is not a fault of the Vhedia unit so I am happy with the purchase.
